For our last project of the year, the first graders learned how to draw a cartoon portrait. Before creating our portrait, we cut out a pair of sunglasses from black paper and glued it down. We also drew and colored backgrounds to make it look like we were outside.

First graders learned about texture and symmetry when creating these beautiful clay butterflies. After cutting a symmetrical butterfly shape, students were able to use a variety of tools such as popsicle sticks and buttons to press into the clay to create designs and textures. The last step was painting the butterflies with bright colors after they had been bisque fired.
After watching a short video on famous artist, Pablo Picasso, the first graders created these flower compositions. First we drew our hands in a realistic manner. Then we added flowers in a very simple style similar to Pablo Picasso. The finishing touch was adding the yellow frame with a word pattern as a design.
Students from all over the district presented their artwork at the annual K-12 Fine Arts Festival held at Ewell elementary this year. I was very proud to hand pick several amazing artists from Switzer to represent our school. It was great to see students and families supporting the arts on opening night and other times throughout the week. Here are some photos of Switzer students next to their creations.

To make these hearts, the First Graders started by drawing one small heart in the middle of the paper. Then they continued to draw heart shapes repeatedly, getting larger and larger, until no more hearts could fit on the page. Our last two steps were to color a pattern within the hearts using crayons and gluing our paper to a coordinating frame.
The first graders learned about the art of printmaking when they used a sponge to stamp their snowman on the paper. We then used a black marker to add details to the snowmen's faces and scarves, and we created a patterned border with cut paper.
The first graders created these radial line designs after brainstorming all the different types of lines that they knew. Then we traced and cut a large circle and glued a special jewel to the center. After that we drew lines in a radial design around the jewel using colorful oil pastels. The last steps were painting over our line designs and gluing the circle to a frame. So mesmerizing!
First graders learned all about color mixing when we created these little birdies. We started by talking about primary and secondary colors. Students used only primary colored paints of red, yellow and blue to fill in each circle. The secondary colors of green, orange, and violet were mixed by the student. Bird details were added with a black marker and the final touch was a patterned frame.
We were inspired by fall when we created our mixed media scarecrows. First graders used a variety of materials for their artwork such as paint, crayons, cut paper, and oil pastels to make their scarecrows come to life.
